Enhancements within PeopleSoft PeopleTools 8.52 include:

Intuitive keyword search: PeopleSoft Application Search simplifies the navigation of application content, business objects and business processes. This version of PeopleTools provides simple, familiar searching capabilities, similar to a common search engine, enabling users to quickly and easily find critical information. In order to provide even greater levels of productivity, the new PeopleTools search includes an integrated related-action framework that enables users to take contextual actions directly from the search results.

SAP Leads, Oracle Lags In Enterprise Apps

The results are in from most of the top names in on-premises ERP software, and the results are clear: SAP is leading, Infor and Epicor are doing well, but Oracle is lagging big time.

SAP on Friday released preliminary numbers for its fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2011, that showed software revenue increased 16% over the year-earlier period (17% in constant currencies) to 1.74 billion Euros ($2.2 billion). Software and software-related services revenue were up 12% over Q4 2010 to 3.72 billion euros ($4.7 billion), handily beating analyst's estimates of 3.6 billion Euros.

By contrast, Oracle's software sales for its fiscal second quarter ended Nov. 30 were up just 2% compared with the year-earlier quarter, whereas analysts expected at least a 7% increase.

The contrast is even sharper if you separate software revenues by type. Oracle's new-license revenues for databases and middleware were up 4% while applications revenue--primarily ERP and CRM--actually declined by 2%. Oracle blamed the overall shortfall on purchase delays tied to new internal approval requirements at customer firms.

Oracle to confirm commitment to non-Fusion applications

Oracle will reconfirm its commitment to upgrading its non-Fusion applications at the UK Oracle User Group conference on Tuesday.

The company first announced its 'applications unlimited' policy back five years ago, its pledge to continue investing in and developing the applications that existed before Fusion indefinitely. These include E-Business Suite, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft and Siebel.

In his keynote presentation at the conference, Rajan Krishnan, VP of applications product development and product management for EMEA at Oracle, will review the upgrade releases for the applications over the past few years and provide a technology roadmap for the future capabilities of the applications.

Krishnan will also outline different approaches that users could take to adopting Fusion technologies.

For users who want to keep their existing applications, for example, he will explain how they can take advantage of Fusion middleware to create a standardized platform on which to run the different applications.

"If you have PeopleSoft or Siebel and you want to standardize the user interface, you can take the WebCentre [the user engagement platform] of Fusion middleware and create a UI [that sits behind all the different applications]," Krishnan said.

In addition, Krishnan will explain how Fusion Applications can be deployed either on-premise, in the cloud or as a mixture of both.

He will illustrate Fusion apps deployment cases with examples from Boeing and Principal Financial Group.

Oracle's PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 Feature Pack 2 Delivers New HR Self Service User Experience

Oracle has introduced PeopleSoft HCM (Human Capital Management) 9.1 Feature Pack 2 which provides a consumer-like self-service user experience to improve the way employees and managers perform their day-to-day activities. Oracle's Feature Packs enable a quicker response to PeopleSoft customer requests, while enabling customers to choose how and when to deploy the new functionality to their users.

A new search-based, menu-free navigation capability allows users to locate and navigate to relevant information quickly and in context from any page. Using a global search capability that goes beyond simple transaction based search, PeopleSoft delivers search results have filtering and specific related actions based on defined roles and security of the user. For example, a manager can now simply type in part of an employee's first or last name and receive meaningful results from documents related to performance, compensation, learning, recruiting, career planning and more. Key HCM data is indexed to speed the search process and improve search relevancy.

A new design provides greater personalization using pagelets that make PeopleSoft HCM easier to use, with a more appealing user interface, as well as reduced click counts on key transactions. The feature pack includes a new Manager Dashboard, Talent Summary, Matrix Organization, and Pivot Grid functionality, among other new capabilities.

Repeating first item in XMLP reports

n an XMLP report, I was finding that the first item (first data entry) was being repeated in the report. The remainder of the items in the report were displaying as expected. After some investigation, a colleague pointed out that this was caused by the root element and data tags having the same value:

For example:

<?xml version='1.0'?> <DATA> <DATA> </DATA> </DATA>

The key is that the tag <DATA> is both the root level element and the tag used by the data elements.

The XML format actually required is this:

<?xml version='1.0'?> <ROOT_ELEMENT> <DATA> </DATA> </ROOT_ELEMENT>

What was causing the issue in this case was the XML file layout field tag. This is set in the file layout properties in the use tab. There is a field there called File Definition Tag. This is where you set the root element tag:

PeopleSoft 8.52 iPad Certification

One of the real gems in the PeopleTools 8.52 release is the certification of PeopleSoft applications running in the Safari Browser on an iPad. It is nice that PeopleSoft is not constrained by technology like Adobe Flex/Flash, so announcements like this "Adobe drops plans for mobile Flash support" do not limit our mobile solution to custom mobile development.

There are parts of PeopleSoft applications that operate better on iPads than others. One of the best is Workcenters. Workcenters were new to PeopleTools 8.51 and we are starting to see more and more adoption of them. Workcenters are roll based landing pages that eliminate difficult navigation by providing access to most links, pages, and reports a user in a role needs. One of the nicest I’ve seen is the Supply Manager Workspace. Here are some links to screenshots of what a WorkCenter looks like on an iPad:

Oracle has released PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 Feature Pack 2 to help managers better perform their day-to-day activities and is designed to change the way managers and employees use self-service HR.

The new PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 applications offers a new search-based, menu-free navigation capability allows users to easily locate and navigate to relevant information quickly and in context from any page.

PeopleSoft HCM is made easier to use, with a more appealing user interface, as well as reduced click counts on key transactions with introduction of new design that provides greater personalisation using pagelets.

PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 Feature Pack 2 contents and features include Manager Dashboard; Talent Summary and Pivot Grid.

PeopleSoft Manager Dashboard includes a home page that consolidates key management, staff, and business unit data into a single at-a-glance access point to view and transact in context and Talent Summary provides a unified view of talent management-related data for an individual employee in a talent roster profile format.

PeopleTools 8.52 introduces the new Pivot Grid feature for operational reporting and the Pivot Grid gives users the ability to pivot and filter data within PeopleSoft applications without having to export data to an external spreadsheet or data warehouse.

In addition, the Feature Pack 2 include: Matrix or Dotted-Line Relationship Management; Interactive Company Directory; Total Rewards Statement and Talent Management 9.1 to HCM 8.9 Integration for Recruiting Solutions.

Matrix or Dotted-Line Relationship Management addresses the challenge of tracking and maintaining project-based organizations that cut across the enterprise and geographic regions and the Interactive Company Directory enables users to connect and collaborate directly with other employees and launch employee transactions or changes.

With Total Rewards Statement employees can have a complete view of their compensation and benefits by pooling rewards data from multiple data sources and the Talent Management 9.1 to HCM 8.9 Integration for Recruiting Solutions provides a complete set of integrations for PeopleSoft HCM 8.9 and 9.0 customers.

Oracle PeopleSoft is pleased to announce the availability of PeopleTools 8.52. Effective 10/28/11, this release is generally available for electronic download from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud. Existing customers who wish to upgrade to PeopleTools 8.52 will be able to do so beginning in November.

PeopleTools 8.52 is important to PeopleSoft customers because it provides significant end-user value and demonstrates Oracle's ongoing commitment to the PeopleSoft product family. The PeopleTools features and capabilities in our recent releases have created more customer excitement than we have seen in years. Many customers have told us they are preparing upgrade plans in order to gain access to these important and valuable features.

The release includes many new features and enhancements that will benefit owners of existing applications while also providing the basis for upcoming application Feature Packs to be released in coming months. New Player Feature: Share

The UPK Player now includes a link above the concept pane called "Share".

When a user clicks the Share link, a dialog box will provide a web address (URL) that can be shared with others. Simply copy the URL and paste it into an instant message or e-mail to share the content with someone else. This feature will allow users to share content with one another, or allow a help desk to more easily share links from a central knowledge base of Player information with users. There are lots of other ways this feature can be used--tell use how you intend to use it in the comments!

Oracle customers face rising support costs following Fusion application roll-out delay

The additional support fees are a result of Oracle's delay in releasing Fusion Applications. This has resulted in some users paying for extended support, rather than upgrading E-Business Suite (EBS).

The delayed release of Fusion applications, which has been six years in the making, may now cause customers to face additional costs as a result.Fusion applications were expected to be released for general availability in March 2011. The applications have now been released under controlled availability through its Early Adopter Programme (EAP). General availability is still under review.

However, Debra Lilley, president of the council and leader of the UK Oracle User Group (UKOUG), said some EBS users now have too little time to assess the new product.

After acquiring numerous rival ERP, CRM, HR and middleware platforms over the years, Oracle is finally linking together its enterprise software portfolio, under Fusion, a service-oriented architecture which could rewrite the rulebook on how enterprise software is acquired and pulled together.

Fusion Applications, which took six years to develop, constitutes Oracle's JD Edwards, E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft and Siebel systems, including functions such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), and human resource systems. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said more than 100 products are now available on the platform.

A significant breakthrough in e-commerce technology promises to deliver all of the buyer benefits of supplier PunchOut catalogs while eliminating the common hassles and potential risks.

A common problem for purchasing organizations that use e-procurement systems (such as Ariba, SciQuest, PeopleSoft, etc.) is getting suppliers 'onboarded' or 'enabled'.

Those terms refer to getting suppliers connected to the e-procurement system and their products, or catalog data, uploaded into the system. Another issue has been the process through which users of such systems locate and purchase the products uploaded by suppliers.

Supplier product/catalog data appear in a typical e-procurement system in one of two ways; as a line item (or 'hosted') catalog, or as a PunchOut catalog.

Hosted catalogs are stored on the buyer's side, appearing as line item listings on a page. Because of space constraints, these listings contain only basic, limited information.

By comparison, PunchOut catalogs are hosted on the supplier's side, presenting products in more of a user-friendly online catalog way. Each product listing can include all relevant photographs and full product details, having more space to display such information.

The wizard default setting for the database is KMASTER. Change KMASTER to whatever your existing database setting. For example KPMASTER5. You can select the existing database from the drop-down list box.
The wizard defaults to KContent, while most existing installations use KPContent.
Typically Kdata needs to be Changed to KPdata
The default launch URL is //servername/KCENTER. Most existing installations use //servername/KPATH50.

It is also recommend that you refere to Knowledge Base Article, ID. 1327397.1 before you begin your upgarde.

Oracle upgraded PeopleSoft Human Capital Management (HCM) this week, it will offer another feature-pack upgrade later this year, and there will be a major 9.2 release next year. Upgrades will continue after that point, Oracle promises.

So, that might leave you wondering -- if PeopleSoft's getting all these upgrades, what's the purpose of Oracle Fusion, the application suite that's supposed to blend all the best from Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, and Siebel? PeopleSoft’s Browser Story Gets “Chromed”

The discussion of Chrome as a supported browser goes back quite some time – I actually don't recall when the first questions on Chrome support came up, but it was a some time ago and it comes up more often as of late. Some people played with the new browser in a PeopleSoft environment, and found it to be rather fast, and it made a positive first impression. But when I pinged customer audiences at OOW and other RUGs, SIGs, PUGs and CABs, very few customers said they were looking to adopt it internally. Some customers have external interfaces where the browser used can't be explicitly controlled; but, Chrome was relatively easy to dismiss - until now.

For those that have reviewed the recently posted PeopleTools 8.52 Release Value Proposition, you will see that we announced our intent to support Google Chrome. Currently, we're looking at adopting a minimum version of Chrome 10, that's very likely to change with Google's aggressive release schedule. Look in My Oracle Support under Certifications when 8.52 goes GA later this year to see what the minimum version actually is.

You know what it's like. Your desk is covered in paper. You were sure you filled out that form that your manager requested last week, but really, it could be anywhere in your office. You can't remember if you submitted it, let alone where it is. Maybe it's already on your manager's desk somewhere? You also wish you had a copy of the last form you submitted so that you could check what you had previously asked for, but you have no hope of finding that one!

PeopleSoft applications are helping to make paper and email-based forms a thing of the past so that you will know what was submitted, when it was submitted, and who approved it. We recently released Forms and Approval Builder as a part of Common Components 9.1. Forms and Approval Builder allows you to build electronic forms that are configurable by business analysts, enabled with approval workflows, and immediately deployable and auditable to enable you to replace paper and email-based forms. Forms and Approval Builder is currently available, at no additional charge, to all PeopleSoft 9.1 customers. It was part of the FSCM Feature Pack March 2011, and it is also available in the Enterprise Components 9.1 Common Objects Bundle 1 2011 for use in any PeopleSoft 9.1 Pillar, including, of course, HCM. It does require PeopleTools 8.51.03 or greater.

Form Design

PeopleSoft Forms and Approval Builder enables business analysts to create electronic, routable forms without having to use PeopleSoft Application Designer. A typical form can be designed and in use within 30 minutes and requires no writing of code.

The intuitive wizard guides you step by step through establishing a form. Options include adding instructions to the form, similar to what you would find on the back of a paper form; adding attachments to the form for users to read, submit, or both; and being able to create your own fields on the form. These fields can be plain text, numbers, date and time, yes/no, fields that prompt against existing PeopleSoft records, and code fields. The code field type enables you to build a list of items on the fly that a person who is filling in the form can select from when perusing the drop-down list. You can create these user prompt values in the code fields without having to enter them in a standard PeopleSoft record beforehand.

Adding fields to the form. Fields can be placed in one or two columns on the screen.

Fields can be organized into one or two columns on the page, and every field on the form has the option of being made required to ensure that users thoroughly complete the form.

You specify the location of the form in the PeopleSoft Main Menu through an easy-to-navigate folder hierarchy, and you select the flow of approvers that the form will follow using the approvers from within the Approval Workflow Engine.

There is also the ability to make forms available for limited periods of time.

Efficient and Effective Forms Management for your Organization

Knowing how many of each type of form are in the system and their approval status is essential in monitoring your business processes. PeopleSoft Forms and Approval Builder comes with its own summarization table, enabling you to see at a glance how many forms of each type have been created and how many forms are in each approval status. This central Form Management repository also enables you to activate and deactivate your forms within the system in one place, eliminating the need to go back into the design of each form and activate it.

The ability to find a particular form in an instant is also important in supporting efficient operations. Forms are searchable by subject, form type, priority, due date, and approval status to eliminate the need for searching through piles of paperwork.

Easy to Navigate Forms Available to Your Users When they Need Them

Any given form may be accessed through either the central forms repository or the link you designate for it in within the PeopleSoft Menu navigation. Users open a blank form; enter the required information; download, read, fill in, and upload attachments; and submit their form for approval.

Forms are available to the approver instantly, and approvals are also available as soon as they are granted.

Oracle cautiously pushes Fusion Applications to enterprises

Oracle is continuing to take a cautious approach in pushing its new Fusion Applications to enterprises.

At the Collaborate 11 user show in Orlando, Fla., today, a senior company executive said that enterprises that want to immediately implement Fusion Applications can do so, by taking advantage of Oracle's early adopter program.

However, Oracle will also continue to fully support its existing business application portfolio for customers that don't want to immediately migrate, said Steve Miranda, Oracle's senior vice president of application development.

The goal is to give customers a way to stay on their current upgrade path with their existing products and to deploy Fusion in modular fashion, when they are ready to do so, he said.

Miranda's comments come amid some concerns that Fusion Apps will somehow result in forced migrations for users of Oracle's legacy business application portfolio, even though Oracle itself has committed to continued enhancements of existing products under its Applications Unlimited program.

Oracle's Fusion Applications is a line of open-standards based business applications similar to the technologies it has acquired over the years from its purchases of companies such as Siebel, Peoplesoft, JD Edwards and others.

The Fusion Application suite features over 100 separate modules including those for financial management, human capital management, governance, risk and compliance, CRM and supply chain management.

The company has been working on the technology for several years now and recently started shipping it to customers under the early adopter program.

Oracle says Fusion Apps integrates best-of-breed features from the various business application products the company has acquired over the year. Miranda said that more 50 enterprises so far have deployed the technology, many of them alongside existing legacy applications.

Companies will be able to seamlessly upgrade their existing business applications to Fusion Apps as long as they are using either the latest version of their legacy software or the version prior to the latest one, he said.

Enterprises will have the choice of deploying Fusion as an on-premise technology or consume it under a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model from Oracle. The tools are architected from the ground up for Web services and will form a core part of Oracle's cloud strategy going forward. "Fusion is our new Software-as-a-Service," Miranda said.

Mark Temple, information technology director at Ciena, said his company is thinking of replacing its 12 year-old Siebel customer relationship management (CRM) technology with a new Fusion CRM capability. In Ciena's case, the company will have to simply rip and replace the legacy technology because it's too old to be upgraded to Fusion, he said.

However, the innovation and the additional functionality present in Fusion will make the move worth it, Temple said.
